The university is looking for an experienced and highly motivated individual to lead the educational, research and service enterprise of the Faculty.
FIXED CONTRACT POSITION: Appointment to the advertised position shall be on fixed contract term of three (3) years, which may be renewable, on the basis of satisfactory performance.
The University of Botswana (www.ub.bw) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. It has opened the country’s first Faculty of Medicine and is establishing an adjacent new state-of-art 450-bed Academic Hospital. The first MBBS undergraduate intake was in August 2009. Undergraduate medical training is by a Problem Based Learning [PBL] Hybrid approach which is integrated and community oriented.  The Faculty has also been able to introduce a number of Master of Medicine programs, which are currently running.   
MAIN DUTIES: The Dean shall a) lead the formulation, implementation and evaluation of the academic policies of the faculty; b) promote excellence in teaching, research, service and patient care; c) Provide overall academic and administrative leadership to the Faculty; d) play an advocacy role for the Faculty of Medicine; and e) establish and maintain functional relationships with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, regulatory bodies and the University management.
By virtue of office, the Dean shall be a member of a) all the Boards and committees in the Faculty; and b) such committees of the Council and Senate as may be prescribed from time to time in the University statutes.
REQUIREMENTS: a) An undergraduate medical degree and a specialist qualification in any specialty of medicine with a minimum of eight (8) years of post-specialization experience in professional practice in the relevant field.  The qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; OR an undergraduate medical degree and a Master’s Degree (preferably PhD) in biomedical, health professions education, public health or other relevant field with a minimum of eight (8) years of post-qualification experience; OR Master’s Degree (but preferably a PhD degree) in Biomedical Sciences or related field with a minimum of eight (8) years of post-qualification experience;  b) must have at least twelve (12) months experience as a Senior Lecturer or higher academic rank; c) At least three (3) years of distinctive record of leadership and administration of university level institution.
ATTRIBUTES AND SKILLS REQUIRED: a) Excellent communication and organizational skills; b) Strong academic leadership skills and sympathy for the values and culture of the University; and c) Good management, human relations, sound analytical and coordinating skills.
