The University is looking for an experienced health professions educator to lead the educational enterprise of the Faculty.
FIXED CONTRACT POSITIONS: Appointment to the advertised position shall be on fixed contract term of three (3) years, which may be renewable, on the basis of satisfactory performance.
The University of Botswana (www.ub.bw) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. It has opened the country’s first Faculty of Medicine and is establishing an adjacent new state-of-art 450-bed Academic Hospital. The first MBBS undergraduate intake was in August 2009. Undergraduate medical training is by a Problem Based Learning [PBL] Hybrid approach which is integrated and community oriented.  The Faculty has also been able to introduce a number of Master of Medicine programs, which are currently running.  
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Deputy Dean shall assist the Dean in the formulation, planning and implementation of academic policies of the Faculty to ensure compliance with the national regulatory framework. They shall be responsible for the academic welfare of the students.
By virtue of office, the Deputy Dean shall be a member of a) all the Boards and committees in the Faculty; and b) such committees of the Council and Senate as may be prescribed from time to time in the University statutes.
MAIN DUTIES: a) Work with the Heads of Department (HODs) and the Dean in the development of the Faculty quality assurance and monitoring systems; b) Lead the review and evaluation of educational performance against set educational plans and strategies; c) Work with the HODs to coordinate development of academic undergraduate programmes; d) Serve as a liaison with relevant professional associations and regional and national regulatory and accrediting agencies; e) Articulate University policy and procedures to students and staff in the Faculty; f) Oversee the preparation of class schedules, time tables and ensure conformity with institutional reporting requirements; and g) Receive and check reports of examinations, tests, assignments etc. from departmental quality assurance representatives for approval.
REQUIREMENTS: a) An undergraduate medical degree and a specialist qualification in any specialty of medicine with a minimum of seven (7) years of post-specialization experience in the relevant field.  The qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; OR an undergraduate medical degree and a Master (preferably PhD) in health professions education OR Master’s Degree (preferably a PhD degree) in Biomedical Sciences or related field with a minimum of seven (7) of post-qualification experience; b) must have at least twelve (12) months experience as a Senior Lecturer or higher academic rank; c) At least  one (1) year of distinctive record of leadership and administration of university level institution or HOD is desirable; d) Evidence of health professions education expertise is required.
