The University is looking for a productive health researcher to lead the research and graduate training enterprise of the Faculty of Medicine
 
FIXED CONTRACT POSITIONS: Appointment to the advertised position shall be on fixed contract term of three (3) years, which may be renewable, on the basis of satisfactory performance.
 
The University of Botswana (www.ub.bw) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. It has opened the country’s first Faculty of Medicine and is establishing an adjacent new state-of-art 450-bed Academic Hospital. The first MBBS undergraduate intake was in August 2009. Undergraduate medical training is by a Problem Based Learning [PBL] Hybrid approach which is integrated and community oriented.  The Faculty has also been able to introduce a number of Master of Medicine programs, which are currently running.  
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Deputy Dean shall a) Establish the faculty’s research and graduate education office; b) Work with the Dean and Heads of Departments to establish a faculty research strategy; c) Lead the implementation of the Faculty research strategy; d) Work with the HODs to coordinate the development and monitoring of postgraduate programmes; e) Cultivate and maintain robust research partnerships locally, regionally and internationally; f) Lead the faculty’s efforts to attract research funding; and g) Ensure alignment of the Faculty’s research strategy to that of the university.
 
REQUIREMENTS: a) An undergraduate medical degree and a specialist qualification in any specialty of medicine with a minimum of seven (7) years of post-specialization experience in the relevant field.  The qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; OR undergraduate medical or other health professional degree and a Master (preferably PhD) in a public health, biomedical sciences or related field with a minimum of seven (7)  years of post–qualification experience; OR Master’s Degree (preferably a PhD degree) in Biomedical Sciences or related field with a minimum of seven (7)  years of post-qualification experience; b) must have at least twelve (12) months experience as a Senior Lecturer or higher academic rank; c) At least one (1) year of distinctive record of leadership and administration of university level institution or equivalent; d) Experience with international research funding agencies and regulatory compliance is required; e) Evidence of active and sustained research and publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals;  f) Experience in the supervision of graduate students; g) Evidence of research mentoring.
 
EXTERNAL CANDIDATES must be at the level of Associate Professor or higher and must have experience at the level of Deputy Dean/HOD in a health professions training institute or equivalent for at least two (2) years.
