Social work education at the University of Botswana was established in 1985, following the transfer of the Certificate in Social Welfare and Community Development from the Botswana College of Agriculture (formerly BAC). Three programmes were mounted, namely the Certificate, Diploma, and Bachelors Degree in Social Work. Since 1985, more than a thousand students have graduated from these programmes and are now employed in various social services and other organisations.

A Masters Degree in Social Work responds to the rapid social changes that are taking place in Botswana. Our society is becoming increasingly complex and as such new problems are emerging: unemployment, homelessness, mass poverty, domestic violence, crime, juvenile delinquency, mental health problems, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS issues, child abuse and neglect, and high rates of suicide. In the past, people relied on the extended family and their communities for much of the support, social security, protection, and sense of belonging that are required to manage such problems. Now, however, we are observing breakdowns of these structures and the need for new approaches and professional competencies to deal with them. Creating a MSW at the University of Botswana is a much-needed investment in meeting this challenge.
