April 20, 2017
Is Paid ? : No
Synopsis - The University of Botswana School of Nursing (WHO Collaborating Centre) in the Faculty of Health Sciences; in collaboration with the World Health Organisation and the Ministry of Health and Wellness; a “Partnership in Health and Development” will host a public lecture to address various health challenges faced by the nation such as health literacy, access to healthcare services, environmental health, gender based violence, water quality, inadequate community infrastructure and harmful cultural practices
The lecture will serve to educate and raise community awareness about these public health issues that affect the nation and how the community can actively take part in curbing these challenges.
Background - The sub-Saharan Africa health sector landscape has in the recent years been challenged with emerging and re-emerging diseases, high prevalence of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and the “collision” of NCDs and infectious diseases. In 2005, NCDs accounted for 23% of deaths in the sub-Saharan Africa, and deaths were expected to increase at much higher rates than those due to infectious diseases.
Poor nutrition and lack of exercise lead to obesity, that result in NCDs. Harmful cultural practices need to be relinquished. Most of these predisposing factors to ill health are preventable. Mature persons have to be responsible for their health and those of their children and elderly parents.
