The Department of Political and Administrative Studies (PAS) is one of the original Departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences mandated to offer a Bachelor of Arts (Social Sciences) in either public administration or political science and combined major or minor programs with other social science disciplines. Through its Southern African Development Community (SADC) Centre of Specialisation in Public Administration and Management (CESPAM), it offers the Master of Public Administration (MPA) that has been operating since 1990 as well as the Short-Term Executive Programs (STEPs). The Department started offering the Master of International Relations (MAPIR) in 2007 and started offering Mphi./Ph.D in 2008started During the 2001/2002 academic year, the Department was designated and started to operate as one of the Centres for Strategic Studies in the SADC region. The department has also been given a new mandate to coordinate a UNESCO regional Centre for Culture and Peace Studies.
