The University of Botswana Data Network (UBDN)
To facilitate access to online services, the IT Department has established a combination of wired and wireless network infrastructure – the University of Botswana Data Network (UBDN). UBDN consists of internal buildings networks connected through a fast campus backbone network, running at 10Gbps. Distant campus networks (Okavango Research Institute in Maun, CCE North in Francistown, and Academic Teaching Hospitals that participate in the University’s Medical School programme) are connected to the University’s main network through the national telecommunications operator’s network.

Wireless Network
The University of Botswana’s wireless network is accessible at almost all parts of the Gaborone campus, including student halls of residence, and at distant campuses. The wireless network is protected from unauthorised access and therefore only staff and students who have been granted network access credentials can gain access through this network.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Although most IT services are available to users through the Internet, a need may arise where a higher level of access similar to that enjoyed when on-campus, is required. Under these circumstances, the IT Department grants users access to the University network through virtual private network (VPN) services.
The University’s VPN service allows the University affiliates to connect to the UBDN remotely from anywhere in the world, including from home, from Internet Cafes, and even from within other companies’ networks.
