The mission of the Department is to provide services of the highest quality to students at the University. It also aims to maintain high levels of collaboration with government and non-governmental organizations and to contribute directly and indirectly, through quality students, to fostering healthy economy and society in Botswana. The levels of teaching and research in the Department are expected to be among the best in the African continent, and the goal is to be the best provider of service in Population Studies.
The primary objective of the Department is the production of the highest quality graduates in population studies with abilities to maximise economic and social development in and outside Botswana.
Specifically, the Department aims to:
- Provide students with very strong theoretical and analytical tools in preparation for successful careers in economic and social planning for populations in developed and developing countries.
- Use state-of-the-art technology and the best staff to prepare students to be among the best researchers in the world.
- Provide voluntary services to the university community, with respect to teaching, research and policies relevant to population and development.
- Provide services to the community, through in-service training, voluntary analysis of population-related data, etc., ensuring that the output is of highest standard.
