Established in 1992, the PHR Department at the University of Botswana has been, and remains, strong in teaching, research and community service. This strength is especially evident in the number of students currently enrolled in the Department - about 400 undergraduate majors and 30 postgraduate students.
The central approach of the B.Ed. degree programme offered by the Department is interdisciplinarity, providing a stimulating and relevant grounding for students planning careers in, for example, research, teaching, sport marketing, recreation management, sport medicine, sport administration and coaching.
The Department has 15 active and distinguished academic staff with teaching and research interests in sport pedagogy, sport management, sport physiology, sport psychology and leisure studies, which constitute the five areas of specialization for the M.Ed (Physical Education) students.
The Department aims to fulfill the University vision and mission by striving for excellence in teaching, research and community service and implementing programmes that are nationally and internationally valued and recognized. It seeks to offer quality and accessible outreach programmes that cater for the health and fitness of all segment of society.
The goal of the Department of Physical Education, Health and Recreation (PHR) is to become a centre of excellence in sports science research, physical education teacher education, sport administration and leisure management innovation.
Our department is proud of its commitment to excellence in scholarship and instruction and its central role in the Faculty of Education and in the broader University as well as the larger national community.
The PHR Department is located in Block 102/010; and shares the building with the Adult Education Department.
