 The Mission Statement

We strive to provide a nurturing, secure and stimulating environment for young children, one in which children can safely explore, learn, play and develop in all areas of growth, socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually.

The Philosophy

At the children's lab, we respect each child as a unique and capable learner. Our practice is based on the belief that optimal growth takes place when we encourage and support the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of each child. We acknowledge that all areas of development are inter-dependent. We value children's individual differences and interests and respond to their particular needs. We foster a positive sense of self for each child by accepting and appreciating all children for who they are. A healthy self-concept is the foundation of all future growth and essential for becoming a self-motivated, independent learner.

We believe young children learn best from self initiated activity with concrete objects. They build on proviso knowledge through repeated experiences. Through social interaction with peers, children learn to decenter: to understand another's point of view. Children, who are active in their own learning process, make sense of the world for themselves and construct their own knowledge. By being autonomous, being governed by oneself, by having choices and making decisions, children learn to be in control of their own learning to be independent thinkers.

The curriculum

In the children's lab, the curriculum evolves from children's interests and experiences. As new ideas emerge, they are integrated into the curriculum. Our child- centered classrooms encourage independent thinking and the freedom to choose activities that engage children.

Due to limited facilities and small number of enrollment, the services of the children's lab are restricted to the University of Botswana community.
